What Are Polarized Lenses – and Do You Need Them?

Polarized lenses are engineered to block horizontal light waves, which cause intense glare — the kind that reflects off water, roads, snow, and glass. This makes them ideal for anyone who spends time outdoors or behind the wheel.

At Artisan Optics, we carry premium polarized lenses in a wide range of designer frames — from sporty wraparounds to luxury fashion styles.

Benefits of Polarized Lenses:

  • Eliminate harsh glare
  • Improve contrast and clarity
  • Reduce eye strain and fatigue
  • Protect from harmful UV rays

Who Needs Them?

  • Drivers
  • Boaters and anglers
  • Hikers and runners

Anyone who loves the outdoors

We’ll help you find the perfect fit and style — and show you the difference polarization makes. Walk-ins are welcome, we are in network with most insurances and same-day eye exams will be available.

Artisan Optics is a local favorite. A source for extraordinary care, personalized service, and known for having a selection of eyewear that can’t be found anywhere else in Idaho.

We are a second generation family-owned optometry practice and optical boutique – and we want to personally thank you for taking the time to discover our products and services. Since 1991, Artisan Optics has served residents of the Treasure Valley and beyond. Over those years we have become the “go-to” destination for those who crave a different kind of vision care experience.

A notable difference between Artisan Optics and other optometry offices in Idaho is our doctors. Our optometrists are residency-trained and nationally recognized experts in their fields. This means when you come to Artisan Optics for vision care you can relax; knowing that you will be well cared for by doctors who are industry leaders.

And wait until you see our eyecatching eyewear selection! We believe you will be delighted with the assortment. We truly have something for everyone. You won’t find our eyeglass frames in other eye doctor’s offices or big box stores. We shun poorly made, generic, mass produced eyeglass frames that don’t stand the test of time. Instead we search the world over to find quality, well-made eyeglass frames; carefully balancing style, comfort, durability, and cost – a true reflection of Idaho values.

While it is true that choosing the perfect pair of glasses is important – who doesn’t enjoy wearing an eyecatching pair of eyeglass frames? – let’s not underestimate the importance of the lenses. At Artisan Optics we meticulously evaluate technical specifications and carefully select the lens design and material that is best suited to your prescription. Nothing cookie cutter here – from proper frame fit to custom measurements to digitally produced lenses and technologically advanced anti-glare coatings, we can expertly fill any prescription.

We know you have choices when it comes to vision care, and that’s why we strive to provide the very best vision care experience in the Treasure Valley. We are committed to earning your trust and consider it a privilege to care for you and your family. If you’ve not yet experienced the Artisan Optics difference, we invite you to stop by. We look forward to meeting you and would be delighted to welcome you to Artisan Optics.

MY MOTTO: EYECARE IS PERSONAL.

“When someone experiences changes in vision, or struggles with glasses or contact lenses, it is not uncommon for them to feel frustrated or overwhelmed. My passion is vision without boundaries. Meaning I know that no single approach is the right one for every patient, and I've been trained in a range of modalities and approaches to treatment. I help my patients by providing thorough examinations and assessments, followed by thoughtful discussions about treatment options and the right solution for them. I can't imagine eyecare any other way – precise, professional, personal.”

BACKGROUND

Dr. Hargrove grew up in Reno, Nevada. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Nevada. Dr. Hargrove continued his education at Pacific University, College of Optometry where he earned his Doctor of Optometry degree, graduating with distinction.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Dr. Hargrove's passion for optometry began early in his career. During his undergraduate education, Dr. Hargrove took his first step into the world of optometry by working at a private practice in Sparks, NV, and earning his Certified Paraoptometric (CPO) certification. Later on, with the desire to broaden his experience, he worked as an optician. This experience serves him well in the exam room today. He has a unique understanding and appreciation of the technical aspects and practical application of lenses – for both glasses and contact lenses, allowing him to prescribe effective solutions for any visual tasks that his patients may have.

In addition, Dr. Hargrove has training specific to primary care, diagnosis, and management of ocular disease, as well as specialty contact lenses.

PERSONAL

Dr. Hargrove has been a regular visitor to Boise for most of his life, falling more in love with the area each time he found himself here. Following graduation from Pacific University, College of Optometry Dr. Hargrove decided he wanted Boise to be his forever home. In his spare time Dr. Hargrove enjoys all that our foothills have to offer – from hiking, to golfing, to skiing. When summer heats up you'll find him floating the river, out on the links, or taking in all of the wonderful restaurants and activities that Boise has to offer.

PASSIONATE ABOUT PATIENT CARE

“Every day for more than 20 years I have been excited about seeing my patients. My favorite part of the exam is when I have the opportunity to talk with the patient about what is going on with their eyes. Teaching you about your eyes allows you to take part in your health care and allows us to work together to meet your visual needs. I can’t tell you how many patients have said ‘this is the first time that has ever been explained to me, it makes sense now.’ I could not imagine caring for my patients without explaining what is going on and how we can fix it.”

BACKGROUND

Dr. Johnson grew up in Craig, Colorado before attending Boise State University. Dr. Johnson continued his education at Pacific University, College of Optometry where he earned his Doctor of Optometry degree.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Dr. Johnson has been part of the Boise community since 1991, where he began practice as a comprehensive optometrist, specializing in primary care optometry, refractive surgery and ocular disease.

In addition to refractive surgery, Dr. Johnson enjoys providing care to patients with ocular disease, double vision, and those requiring urgent care for eye infections or minor emergencies.

PERSONAL

Dr. Johnson returned to Boise following graduation from Pacific University, College of Optometry. He enjoys the Boise climate for his year-round outdoor activities. To unwind Dr. Johnson heads into his yard, where he enjoys caring for his ever growing collection of trees and shrubs.

PHILOSOPHY OF CARE

I believe in an individualized approach to patient care. You can expect my full attention, so your concerns are addressed. I prioritize patient education, ensuring you understand your vision conditions and treatment options. My goals are to find solutions to your vision needs and develop a long-term plan of care that provides the best vision possible for years to come.

BACKGROUND

Dr. Johnson is a Boise native who grew up around the family optometry practice. This provided the unique perspective of learning the importance of thoughtful patient care in combination with specific vision solutions, and the effect on patients' lives. His experience came full circle when he learned that half of the human brain is involved in visual function; far more than simply seeing 20/20. It was at that moment he knew he wanted to become a residency-trained neuro-optometrist, trained to detect problems that overlap an extensive range of diseases that can be related to the eye, brain, or extra ocular muscles.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Dr. Johnson has been in practice at Artisan Optics for over a decade. He completed his undergraduate studies at Boise State University. Dr. Johnson continued his education at Southern California College of Optometry, where he earned his Doctorate of Optometry degree. He then went on to post-graduate studies at the University of California Berkeley, where he completed a year of sub-specialty residency training in binocular vision and neuro-optometry. His advanced training allows him to better diagnose and treat vision conditions related to functional visual performance and neurological disorders impacting the visual system. Dr. Johnson is a Fellow of the America Academy of Optometry, a reflection of his commitment to ongoing education and career development.

Dr. Ryan Johnson provides comprehensive eye care for his patients, however his area of specialty is addressing vision issues beyond 20/20. Headaches, dry eye, computer vision syndrome, and persistent visual discomfort are a few areas of passion for Dr. Johnson.

PERSONAL

Dr. Johnson is an Idaho native, born and raised in Boise. In his spare time you will find Dr. Johnson enjoying his time being dad. You'll find he and his wife cheering their daughter on as they share their love of soccer, meeting new families at dance recitals, and exploring the network of foothill trails. As the day winds down, Dr. Johnson enjoys time tending his ever growing collection of Japanese maples.
